Edwin "Rick" Berger Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN — Edwin “Rick” Berger, 79, passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2026.

Born Oct. 1, 1946, Rick graduated from Westmoreland Central High School in New York. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Slippery Rock State College in Pennsylvania and later received his Master of Science degree in education from Youngstown State University.

Rick proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a corporal on active duty from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. He continued his service in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1972. In recognition of his dedication, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

After his military service, Rick remained committed to helping fellow veterans by counseling them through the Veterans Affairs office at Youngstown State University. In this role, he provided support, guidance and a steady presence for those continuing their education after service.

Rick had a strong interest in local and national politics. He was known for his firm beliefs and his willingness to engage in thoughtful, lively conversations with those around him. He also authored “Traficant Got Screwed,” a subject he felt very passionately about.

Rick was a dedicated supporter of both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Youngstown State University. He faithfully followed the basketball teams each season and was a familiar face in the stands. Many came to recognize him at the games, where his enthusiasm and loyal presence never went unnoticed.

He also enjoyed playing bocce and spending time with friends at Crickets Bar & Grill, a place where he felt at home. He especially treasured his monthly lunches with his best friends, Mike and Anthony. Those gatherings were filled with laughter, shared memories and meaningful conversations – moments of friendship he deeply valued.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Alma D. Berger; his father, E. Robert Berger; and his brother, Dr. Edward R. Berger.

He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie M. Bennett; his son-in-law, Reid Bennett; and his beloved grandchildren, Roman Anthony (10) and Blaise Nicholas (3).
