Poland - Angela Maria (Santangelo) Smesko, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 11, 1934, in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter of Perry and Mary (Marinelli) Santangelo.
Angie was a 1952 graduate of Boardman High School. After graduation, she began working for Ohio Bell as a telephone operator and retired in the engineering department. She was honored by the company for her loyal service of more than 36 years.
She married Andrew John Smesko, on January 29, 1955. They were happily married for 56 years.
Angie was a Blue Bird leader and a Camp Fire Girls leader. She was a member of the Boardman local school PTA, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Youngstown Ladies Guild.
Angie’s greatest joy was time spent with her family and treasured traveling to attend all the grandchildren’s sporting events. She had such a pride in all their accomplishments. She will always be remembered by her family Sunday dinners and her Christmas Eve traditional Italian meal including crab claws. She had a passion for cooking. Some of her family and friend’s favorites were her pizza, pepperoni rolls, spaghetti and meatballs and pizzelles. She loved playing Phase 10, dominoes and card games with loved ones. She cherished her trips to Florida and beach time with the grandkids. She enjoyed her Sunday night card games with her girlfriends and their trips to the casino.
She will forever be remembered by her trademark phrase when asked how she was doing –“Fat & Sassy”
She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her four daughters, Andrea (Jack) Crogan, Annette Fernback, Anita (Bruce) Burns, all of Boardman, Anna (Rusty) Orth of Jacksonville, Florida; ten grandchildren, Andy (Ashley) Crogan, John (Hannah) Crogan, Robby and Joey Fernback, Alexis and Alan Burns, Calvin (Stephanie) Orth, Perry (Shannon) Orth, Evan (Caitlyn) Orth and Angela Orth; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Frank Santangelo.
Family and friends may pay their respects to Angela on Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. Boardman.
There will be a prayer service held on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 9:15 am at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, Boardman, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown with the Very Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio as celebrant.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
